Steve Cooper reflects on 'huge error' in Nottingham Forest's FA Cup win over Huddersfield Town

Boss Steve Cooper felt his Nottingham Forest were “deserved” winners in their FA Cup clash with Huddersfield Town.

His only disappointment was that the Reds didn’t score more than the two goals which proved enough to set up a quarter-final tie against Liverpool.

Forest had a goal controversially ruled out early on against the Terriers, with Sam Surridge thwarted by a questionable offside flag.

The visitors immediately went down the other end and opened the scoring against the run of play, through Tom Lees.

But Cooper’s side responded through goals from Surridge and Ryan Yates. And they could have had more, with Djed Spence and James Garner both missing good chances.

“We should have gone 1-0 up. It’s a huge error from the linesman, isn’t it, for Sam’s disallowed goal,” Cooper said.

“It was disappointing to go 1-0 down, but we played really well in the first half - both before and after the goals.

“We were the dominant team in the first half.

“I liked the fact the mentality wasn’t derailed after going 1-0 down. We quickly got back into our rhythm and scored two good goals.

“The second half was a real good cup tie. With it having to be decided on the night, they made a load of changes and put a load of attackers on the pitch.

“We knew we had to manage that, but also knew we had space to counterattack. With Djed’s chance and Jimmy’s chance, it should have been three or four - with the disallowed one, maybe five.

“There was only one team who deserved to win tonight. The boys did well.”
