STAT ATTACK | Sundowns make global top 10 best ball possession club ahead of Liverpool, Man United

Mamelodi Sundowns have a greater ball possession percentage total than Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester United per domestic league match since the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

CIES Football Observatory, a popular research group based in Zurich, Switzerland, has again released fascinating data on teams from all global domestic leagues.

There are six categories of data that has been collect by CIES - shots on target, passes in opponent third, ball possession, accurate passes, shots on target conceded and passes conceded in own third.

In South Africa's top-flight, Kaizer Chiefs have recorded the highest shots on target with 4.5 per game, while rivals Sundowns only notched up 4.2 but have played one game less.

For passes made in opponents' final third of the pitch, Sundowns are far superior with 200.4 passes compared to second place Cape Town City's 156.9 passes made.

Sundowns also boast a stronger accuracy for passing with 86.7%, with TS Galaxy surprisingly holding the second slot ahead of Orlando Pirates and Amakhosi.

The Brazilians are the best-placed team in South Africa for ball possession with an average of 65.2% and overall are placed an astonishing eighth globally, ahead of Liverpool (63.2%) and Manchester United (48%).

Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk top the chart with 67.4% but have only played six matches, while Manchester City are the second best placed team with 67.2%, while Benfica, Qarabag, Ajax Amsterdam, Celtic, Kaspiy FK, Rangers and Slavia Praha complete the top 10.
