Star of 'most chilling series ever' says her friends 'can't keep watching' tense show

Jessica Raine, star of Call the Midwife, has shared some intriguing details about the second series of her 'chilling' TV show The Devil's Hour.

The 42-year-old actress, renowned for her role as Jenny Lee in Call the Midwife, portrays the lead character Lucy Chambers in Amazon Prime Video's The Devil's Hour, which also features Peter Capaldi as Gideon Shepherd.

The inaugural season of the time-travelling psychological thriller, crafted by Tom Moran, traced the historical details linking serial killer Gideon and mother Lucy. In the second series, the new five episodes serve as both a sequel and a prequel, unveiling Gideon's genuine motives as he forms a shaky alliance with Lucy to track down and eliminate an elusive evil force.

However, Lucy's past-life spouse DI Ravi Dhillon (Nikesh Patel), whom she guided in another timeline, is collaborating with DS Sam Boyd (Saffron Hocking) to apprehend Gideon. Concurrently, Lucy's son Isaac (Benjamin Chivers) grapples with survival in a reality that denies his existence, succumbing to powerful new emotions that will alter the destiny of all characters and their recurring lives.

On Wednesday's episode of Lorraine, guest presenter Christine Lampard said of the series: "It's been dubbed TV's most chilling show!" while questioning Jessica about her portrayal of the "complex" character Lucy.

Jessica spoke about her character's introduction in the first series, saying: "So in series one, we meet Lucy, she's very frazzled. She is the mother of an eight-year-old boy who is an emotionless blank so that is sort of disturbing in itself. She wakes up at 3:33am every morning from a horrible nightmare, she keeps getting flashes of deja vu and memories", reports the Mirror.
