Stanley Gene and Kev Deighton to take over Danny McGuire as Hull KR reserves coaches

Hull KR assistant coach and club legend Stanley Gene will take over Danny McGuire as reserves head coach alongside long-serving stalwart Kev Deighton.

McGuire is now the interim coach at Sewell Group Craven Park after Tony Smith's departure on Monday morning and, as a result, has had to take a step back from his role managing the club's second team.

During two stints at the club, Gene made 171 appearances for the Robins, scoring 105 tries. Primarily a half-back, the PNG legend also played in the back-row in his later seasons under Justin Morgan.

Gene is no stranger to coaching, as the Papua New Guinean coached his country in the 2010 Four Nations, and he also had a stint with Gateshead Thunder in 2014 before returning to East Hull to join Tony Smith's backroom staff as a defensive coach alongside fellow assistants McGuire and Dave Hodgson.

Deighton's CV in the game speaks for itself as well. After working under Justin Morgan in the 2006 promotion campaign, he has worked with Hull University, Hull FC, and England University. KD has also coached the Robins at under 16's, under 19's and reserve level.

Gene and Deighton's first game will come tomorrow night when Rovers face rivals Hull FC at Brantingham Park. The derby will be a curtain-raiser ahead of Sunday's Magic Weekend showdown between the Robins and Airlie Birds, as the pair will be hoping to get off to the perfect start as head coaches and take home the bragging rights for the Red and White's

McGuire confirmed the news during his first press conference as Hull KR interim coach.

"They'll be a shake-up," said McGuire. " Stanley Gene and Kev Deighton will be taking over from me in
