St Cuthbert Wanderers gain revenge with Potts Cup victory

St Cuthbert Wanderers gained revenge on Threave Rovers on Tuesday night.

The Kirkcudbright side triumphed in the Potts Cup final just days after the Castle Douglas side denied them the League Cup.

Dan Carmichael gave Threave the lead on Tuesday night but a Scott Ballantyne double put Saints in front at the break.

And it was a lead they weren’t to lose, making up for the double disappointment of the previous week.

St Cuthbert Wanderers suffered a double disappointment in the space of just 48 hours.

Last Wednesday, their hopes of promotion were killed off as they lost to Darvel.

And just days later Threave beat them 4-1 in the League Cup.

Saints’ promotion hopes were already slim after they lost 7-0 to East champions Tranent in their first game.

And they were dealt a further blow when Allan Mackenzie gave West winners Darvel an early lead at St Mary’s Park.

Jordan Kirkpatrick doubled the lead before the break before Russell Williamson reduced the deficit with a penalty.

However, former Queen of the South midfielder Ian McShane scored late on to give Darvel the win.

Saints boss, Jordan Williamson, said: “Against Tranent it felt like we left ourselves exposed

“Going into Wednesday we were the complete opposite. We shut ourselves down as we knew we would be heavy legged after Tranent and had the cup final to come.

“With the plastic pitch we knew Darvel, with the players they had, would be in control so we didn’t want to let ourselves be easily breached.

“I thought all the players were unbelievable. They made it really hard for Darvel to break us down and it was gutting to concede in the last minute as they felt they deserved the 2-1 scoreline.”

Saints’ misery continued on Friday night as they lost to Threave in the League Cup
