St Cuthbert Wanderers full of energy after first win over Stranraer
St Cuthbert Wanderers were full of energy after recording their first win of the season on Saturday.
The Kirkcudbright side won 4-1 against Stranraer’s reserves to dump them out of the Haig Gordon Cup.
That gave Ian Clark his first victory since he took charge in the summer.
He said: “The energy about the place after it was very high.
“I think we all knew it was coming and it was a matter of time until these players gelled.
“The scorelines in the last few weeks didn’t reflect how we played and even 4-1 doesn’t reflect it – I think we were better than four.
“Not getting a clean sheet is disappointing but we work towards being better every week.
“A lot of people have messaged me about getting that monkey off our back and hopefully the boys can build on it.
“Their ability, how they play and their work ethic has never been in question, what we’ve looked at over the last few weeks is fitness.
“I think we’re getting to a level where we can compete. After 55 or 60 minutes it was 2-0 and they got one back from a quick free-kick.
“We’ve spoken about fitness in the last 30 minutes being a challenge but the boys found another gear and we finished the game off with five or 10 minutes to go.”
Joe McMillan, who recently signed for the club from Creetown, scored twice for Saints with youngster Charlie Caygill also on target.
Clark added: “I said last week if we were a bit more clinical in front of goal we would be winning games and we were so clinical.
“Joe got half a chance and put it in the back of the net.
“The boys were told to enjoy the moment and remember how it feels.
“It was coming, I think everyone round the club knew it and the fans, players and committee enjoyed it.”
Saints will have to wait
