St Cuthbert Wanderers end wait for league win with victory over Wigtown & Bladnoch

St Cuthbert Wanderers finally got their first league points of the season on Saturday.

But boss Ian Clark says they’ve played better this term and lost.

The Kirkcudbright side came out on top against Wigtown thanks to a goal from Dylan Paberzs.

And while relieved to finally get off the mark, Clark said: “The message was well done, we’ve not been at our best, we’ve played better and got beaten so well done for grounding it out.

“But we need to remember it’s one game and we need to build on it.

“We need to keep doing what we’re doing and working hard. The mood was decent, the players, fans and committee deserve it but for me it’s one game, so let’s go and try to put a run together. It’s good to get on the board, there was nothing worse than watching the league table and us having zero points.

“It gives the boys a platform, we have a game or two in hand and if we win those it moves us off the bottom two.

“There’s positives to take but there’s certainly plenty we could do better. If you’re on the run of form we’ve had you take what you can.”

Saints didn’t make things easy for themselves, full-back Efe Osaretin being sent off with half an hour to go for foul and abusive language.

But Clark was pleased with how his side rallied to ensure they took three points. He said: “They knuckled down and we made some changes to our formation. They had been down to 10 men and it was harder to play against them, so when we went down to 10 it was our chance to refocus.”

The two sides meet again this Saturday and Clark added: “Now we’ve had a wee bit of sparring they’ll know more about us and we know about them.
