St Cuthbert Wanderers boss says loss to Lochmaben is toughest defeat so far
Saturday’s loss to Lochmaben was the toughest defeat so far for St Cuthbert Wanderers boss Ian Clark.
The Kirkcudbright side were undone by three set-pieces in the Potts Club, losing 3-2 even though the visitors had their goalie sent off early on.
Clark said: “It’s probably the toughest – and given we’ve had an 11-0 and 13-0 defeat that’s saying something – because I think it’s the best I’ve seen the boys play.
“We did everything right other than set pieces. It wasn’t goals where it was the first ball that beats us, it’s the second.
“If a team has cut you open and played good football I’ll say well done, but that one probably hurts more than the others considering we played so well. We controlled the game from start to finish and played really good football.
“I feel like a broken record at times but we conceded goals from three set pieces and when you do that in a game it’s always going to be a challenge to win it.
“We played them off the park – they went down to 10 men but even at 11 v 11 we were very comfortable, we had a few chances, then concede from a set piece.
“We split them open with a lovely pass, were one-on-one with the keeper and he wipes him out and is sent off. Playing against 10 men can sometimes be a little more challenging and they’ve been reinvigorated.
“We are our own worst enemies and the reality is we’re the solution.”
Saints have managed just one win so far this season – a 4-1 Haig Gordon Cup success over Stranraer.
The two sides meet in the league this weekend but Clark knows it’ll be difficult to repeat that earlier success.
He said: “Since that defeat to us they’ve been on a very good run. They’re a team we won’t take lightly and I rate them really highly.
