SSE Airtricity First Division round-up: Cork and Galway earn wins

Cork City remain on top of the SSE Airtricity First Division Table after Cian Murphy's goal gave them a 1-0 win over Wexford at Ferrycarrig Park.

As has been the case for Colin Healy’s side in recent weeks, they struck early with Murphy netting in the fifth minute as he headed home Cian Bargary’s cross.

It was a pretty even affair from there though with Wexford digging in while Cork’s Barry Coffee saw a couple of efforts repelled by home shot-stopper Paul Hunt in the second half.

Galway United remain just three points behind the league leaders as they also were 1-0 victors, the Connacht side winning at home against Cobh Ramblers.

Killian Brouder settled the tie in the 67th minute as he volleyed home at the back post minutes before making a superb tackle on Beineón O’Brien Whitmarsh to prevent the Cobh player from getting a clear run on the Galway goal.

Galway pushed hard for a second late on, but while it didn’t arrive, all three points were secured at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Athlone Town remain rooted to the foot of the table but they did pick up their first point of the season after a 1-1 draw at home to Bray Wanderers.

It was Bray who took the lead in the 13th minute as Kurtis Byrne fired to the net. Athlone drew level just before the hour though as Thomas Oluwa curled home to secure a point.

Waterford and Longford Town also drew 1-1 in Friday’s other clash.

Visitors Longford who hit the front in the 36th minute through Shane Elworthy and that looked like it would prove the winning goal, but Louis Britton had other ideas as he headed home from a corner late into additional time to secure a point for Waterford.
