Springboks rally to beat All Blacks and win Freedom Cup in Cape Town thriller

The Springboks rallied to beat the All Blacks in a thrilling Rugby Championship Test in Cape Town on Saturday evening.

The Boks won 18-12 after trailing 9-3 at the break and win the Freedom Cup for the first time since 2009.

As was the case at Ellis Park last weekend, the world champions fought back to put one hand on the Rugby Championship trophy.

Bok skipper Siya Kolisi scored the game's opening try early in the second half and that proved the impetus for another comeback win.

The Boks have now beaten the All Blacks four times in a row – the first time they've done this since 1949.

It wasn't pretty in the beginning though as South Africa just couldn’t get going in the first half.

They made several mistakes, which included 26 missed tackles.

Jasper Wiese’s yellow card in the 15th minute - for giving away a cynical penalty in his own 22m area - hardly helped matters.

This allowed New Zealand flyhalf Damian McKenzie to kick an easy penalty to open the scoring in 15th minute (3-0).

All Blacks winger Sevu Reece then received a yellow card in 17th minute for making air contact with Willie le Roux, who had fielded a high ball.

But the All Blacks extended their lead in the 29th minute via another penalty from McKenzie (6-0).

The Boks were finally on the board in the 32nd minute when flyhalf Handre Pollard landed a 40m penalty.

Just before the break, the All Blacks launched several phases of attack near the Bok tryline and they were rewarded with a penalty in front which McKenzie slotted.

It saw the Kiwis lead 9-3 at half-time.

The Boks came out firing in the second half and were rewarded for their dominance when skipper Kolisi barged over in the 49th minute.

Pollard converted to put the hosts ahead for the first time in the game (10-9).
