Springbok egos bruised after letting in late, soft Welsh score: 'One maul try one too many'

"One maul try against the Springboks is one too many."

Springbok forwards coach Deon Davids has vowed that his troops won't be conceding a soft try of that nature again following some thorough introspection over what led to Wales' third try at Loftus at the weekend.

Seemingly belatedly in control just moments after forcing a penalty try, the South Africans fudged the kick-off and then bafflingly failed to stop the Dragons' purposeful maul despite the visitors only having 13 men on the field.

That score tied proceedings up at 29-all before Damian Willemse's last-gasp penalty secured the hosts' win.

"Yeah, that's the type of lessons you still learn at this level," said Davids.

"We had a few fresh faces on at the time. I'm not saying its their fault, but for someone like [debutant] Salmaan Moerat you're put in a pressure situation fairly immediately. And sometimes, even though the players actually know exactly what to do in a situation like that, the pressure gets to you.

"That's when the concentration levels go down a bit."

Even though the sequence looked patently messy, Davids believes diagnosing the fault is fairly simple.

"Basically, we had our roles mixed up a bit. When a play like that goes wrong, you look at three things," he said.

"You look at the overall plan, at the system and the effort of the players in executing that plan. In this case, I believe is was a system glitch though, to be fair, I also think the players could've shown a bit more intent, just in simply trying to stop the maul.
