Sports Minister 'salutes' Pirates after CAF Confed Cup final loss: 'You made us proud'

Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa paid tribute to losing CAF Confederation Cup finalists Orlando Pirates, who went down to Moroccan side RS Berkane 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria.

Thembinkosi Lorch, who equalised late for Pirates in extra time, was the only Pirates player to miss in the shoot-out, while Berkane scored all theirs to lift the trophy.

Bucs had six-goal worthy shots on target, with one being a big chance for Deon Hotto, but only one effort hitting the back of the net. Meanwhile, Berkane's stubborn defensive approach meant they had only two shots on target but scored from a penalty in extra time after regulation time finished 0-0.

Mthethwa said: "You made us proud and, once again, you demonstrated the competitiveness of South African football clubs that continue to excel in CAF tournaments."
