SPFL and Premier League fixture latest as Celtic, Rangers and Hearts face backlog plus radical UCL solution

Decisions are set to be taken on this weekend's SPFL and Premier League matches as football bosses meet following the Queen's death.

The Irish FA have already declared that no matches will take place in Northern Ireland this weekend after the 96-year-old monarch's passing was announced on Thursday. And associations in Scotland, England and Wales could follow suit as a mark of respect. The Queen's death places the UK into a period of official mourning and events in golf, horse racing and cricket have already been called off. Dundee's Championship meeting with Cove Rangers, which was scheduled for Friday night, will no longer go ahead.

Earlier information had indicated the decision could be left up to clubs but reports south of the border are now claiming it's league bosses who will make a final decision. This could still lead to a raft of postponements if its decided the appropriate course of action is not to play.

Premier League teams are understood to be meeting at 11am with an outcome on this weekend's SPFL matches also expected on Friday. A date for the Queen's funeral has not yet been confirmed but it's understood government recommendation is sporting events do not take place on that day.

The mourning period also creates uncertainty for British clubs competing in Europe, with several having fixtures in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League over the next week. Celtic, Rangers and Hearts are among them as they face Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli and RPS, respectively. Both Celtic and Hearts' fixtures are outside the UK and it's been suggested those games could go ahead as normal.
