Speed limit reductions, safer cycle lanes and pedestrian priority crossings coming to Old Trafford

Major upgrades and a speed limit reduction is being planned for a road through Old Trafford.

Trafford council is asking residents for their views on plans to revamp the route from Wharfside Way to Moss Road, in a bid to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

The town hall and contractors Amey PLC are working together in the One Trafford Partnership to deliver the plans, which are set to be completed in two stages.

The speed limit is set to be reduced along Wharfside Way to 30mph and the first phase of changes will see improvements along Sir Matt Busy Way and the Village Circle roundabout.

These are set to include upgrades to the existing cycle lanes, improvements to the cycling and pedestrian crossings along the route and the introduction of a cycling/pedestrian priority pathway running continuously along the route that prompts vehicles to give way at minor junctions.

A spokesperson for OneTrafford said: “The objective of these upgrades is to provide a safer and more user-friendly experience for residents to walk and cycle along Wharfside Way and encourage residents and visitors of key attractions such as Trafford Park, Media City and Old Trafford Stadia to adopt sustainable modes of travel, whilst enhancing connectivity to the wider cycle route network, including National Cycle Route 55 and Route 82.”

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has allocated £160m to develop walking and cycling infrastructure across the city-region.

One Trafford secured £40m of that funding pot to use towards a total of seven new projects across Trafford, including this one along Wharfside Way.
