Armed police are dealing with a "major incident" in Southport after reports that one person - believed to be a child - has died with more than 10 people believed to include adults and children injured after a man entered a property. Emergency services were called to Hart Street at around 12pm on Monday, July 29, and a nearby children's hospital has declared a 'major incident'.

The Liverpool ECHO understands that one person - believed to be a child - has died, while possibly more then ten others - both adults and children - have been taken to hospitals around the region with major traumas.

At least eight people are being treated for stab wounds with some of the casualties taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said they sent 13 ambulances along with specialised resources from their Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), Air Ambulance and Merit Doctors to the scene.

A spokesman said: "So far, NWAS has treated eight patients with stab injuries who have been taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Southport and Formby hospital."

Alder Hey Children's Hospital have declared a "major incident" with bosses there asking parents to only bring their children "if it is urgent".

Eyewitnesses have described the scene as a "major incident" with dozens of police at the scene. A statement from Mersey Police said: "There are a number of reported casualties." A man has been detained and a knife has been seized, police have confirmed.
