Southampton tipped to let Fraser Forster leave this summer

Fraser Forster is expected to leave Southampton in the summer but there is still a possibility that he could be offered a new contract if he is willing to take a pay cut, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

Forster looked all but certain to leave Saints at the end of the season, but there now appears to be a possibility that he could remain with his current employers.

Forster’s agreement with Southampton – worth £70,000-per-week – is set to expire in the summer, leading to doubts over his immediate future.

The goalkeeper, who is Saints’ second-highest earner, joined the club for a fee in the region of £10million from Scottish Premiership giants Celtic in 2014 and has gone on to make 149 appearances for his current employers.

With Alex McCarthy also out of contract in the coming months, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl revealed earlier in the season that his intention was to allow one of his goalkeepers to depart at the season’s climax but tie the other down to a new deal.

Saints were reportedly close to agreeing fresh terms with McCarthy in November, with that heightening the prospect of Forster heading through the St Mary’s exit door.

But a new McCarthy contract has failed to come to fruition and, as a result, there are still question marks over Southampton’s goalkeeping department going forward.
