Southampton now considering bid for £35m star at St Mary's

Southampton might be preparing to launch another bid for PSV star Cody Gakpo, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Saints are the latest Premier League club to register their interest in the services and Sheth reckons they’re lining up a second offer for the winger.

According to the Telegraph, Southampton saw their opening offer of £21.4m rejected for the 23-year-old, who’s been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United this window.

But the report claims that Antony’s arrival at Old Trafford has all-but ended their interest in Gakpo, which should improve Saints’ chances of landing a shock deal to bring him to St Mary’s.

Southampton’s bid fell short of PSV’s £38.4m asking price, however, although the Dutch giants are prepared to sell their talisman, who scored once and assisted twice in a 60 minute cameo at Excelsior on Sunday.

However, Sheth reckons that with Gakpo’s PSV future still very much up in the air, he expects Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side to return with a second offer.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “There are other Premier League clubs interested in Gakpo, including Southampton, who look like they might be making a bid for the PSV Eindhoven forward.”

You only have to look at the fact that Gakpo was firmly on Manchester United’s radar to know what sort of signing this would be if Southampton can somehow pull it off.

Saints have scored just five goals in their first four Premier League games and have looked short on quality in the final third, although they were unfortunate not to steal a point against United on Saturday.

Regardless, Gakpo would be an instant upgrade on what Hasenhuttl has at his disposal, even though he’s never played in English football.

Gakpo was one of the most productive wide players
