Southampton: 6 ft star's potential St Mary's exit 'could be a big blow'

Southampton losing Oriol Romeu could be a significant loss to the team, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

The midfielder has become an important part of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side since joining from Chelsea in 2015.

Romeu is moving towards the final year of his contract at St Mary’s, and he has not signed an extension since November 2020.

The 30-year-old was recently asked whether he saw his future at Southampton. He answered by claiming that he is enjoying his time at the club, but admitted that he was unsure whether he would still be with the team in the long-term.

“In football, everything changes so quickly,” he told Hampshire Live.

“Even if I tell you now that I will be here for the next three years, I cannot be 100 per cent sure of that. We will see how it goes year by year and what position we are in.

“I love being here, I love the club and I love everyone around, but also the club has sometimes different objectives or you as a person might think it is time to move on. We will see where we get to when we finish the season and we will try to make the best decision for both sides.”

Romeu’s comments could be interpreted as somewhat cryptic as he refused to fully commit his future to Southampton.

With the 6 foot holding midfielder leaving the door open for a potential exit, Barclay has conceded that Romeu would be missed.

Speaking about the experienced Spaniard, Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s just a really reliable player. He’s formed a really good relationship with Ward-Prowse. So, if they were to lose him, that could be a big blow. But at the same time, the club are always looking to the future.”
