Southampton: £21.1m striker would be 'really good signing' at St Mary's

Southampton target Sasa Kalajdzic would ‘definitely be an improvement’ on their current options, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Stuttgart throughout the summer, and St. Mary’s has been outlined as a potential destination.

Kalajdzic only has 12 months left to run on his contract at the Mercedes-Benz Arena and is expected to seek pastures new over the coming weeks rather than put pen to paper on fresh terms.

And David Ornstein of The Athletic reported back in May that Southampton were one of several interested parties in the Austria international, who has a €25 million (£21.1m).

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund were also listed as potential suitors alongside Brighton and Hove Albion and Benfica.

However, reliable Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has provided an update on Kalajdzic’s situation, stating that Bayern and Dortmund are no longer keen on his services but Manchester United now have him on their radar.

A formal offer is yet to materialise for the 6 foot 7 giant, though, and if Southampton are able to bring him to St. Mary’s it would surely be considered a considerable coup.

O’Rourke believes that Southampton are a ‘bit light’ in the final third of the pitch and that Kalajdzic could add a ‘focal point’ that they’ve been missing in recent times.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think upfront they’re maybe a bit light. So, I think Kalajdzic would definitely be an improvement on what they’ve got already and a focal point that maybe they’ve been missing for the last couple of seasons.

“So, I think he could be a real good signing for Southampton, and I’m sure there’ll be other clubs interested in him as well.”
