South Africa finish netball Quad Series in 4th place after close playoff loss to England

A spirited South African side lost to England in their bronze netball Quad Series playoff encounter at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Wednesday.

There is still a lot of work that needs to be done ahead of July's Netball World Cup, as Proteas went down 49-42 to finish the series in fourth place.

South Africa opened the scoring as Lenize Potgieter slotted a goal and the hosts maintained the lead for the first five minutes, but silly mistakes led England back into the match.

The Proteas came back nicely, however, as the quarter ended 12-all.

It was an enthralling second quarter with both sides again neck and neck. South Africa had an opportunity to lead at half-time, but a late turnover saw Olivia Tchine and Eleanor Cardwell find the net for England to make the score 25-23 in favour of the visitors at half-time.

England dominated the third quarter, although the Proteas had their fair share of missed opportunities at goal.

England dominated the final quarter, outscoring the home side 13 to 8.

Potgieter was on song for the Proteas as she converted 30 goals from 31 attempts during the match, while Nicole Taljaard struggled a bit as she made 10 goals from 14 shots on target.

Australia and New Zealand will play in the Quad Series final at 18:00.
