Daniil Medvedev reaches quarterfinals while Iga Swiatek sinks in Cincinnati

Cincinnati Masters quarterfinals on Thursday while women's world number one Iga Swiatek was upset by American Madison Keys. Top seed Medvedvev kept Denis Shapovalov winless against world number ones with a 7-5, 7-5 victory while Poland's Swiatek lost 6-3, 6-4 to 2019 Cincinnati champion Keys, who needed five match points to finish off the shock triumph. Shapovalov, who lost in an hour and three-quarters, has dropped all eight career matches he has played against the elite echelon. Medvedev moved into a quarter-final against 11th seed Taylor Fritz after the American stopped number six seed Andrey Rublev 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, 7-5. "It was a fight today, definitely not easy," said Medvedev, who clinched the top US Open seeding when Rafael Nadal lost here in the second round.

1st Test: Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj extend South Africa's lead against England on Day 2

England captain Ben Stokes had bowled his side back into the game when he removed well-set opener Erwee (73) and Rassie van der Dussen (19) in quick succession to leave the Proteas 192-5. But come stumps on the second day South Africa were 289-7 -- 124 runs ahead. Jansen was 41 not out, having added 72 in just 75 balls for the seventh wicket with Maharaj (41) as they punished England's failure to bowl to increasingly unorthodox fields. South Africa had earlier dismissed England for just 165, with fast bowler Kagiso Rabada taking 5-52 -- his 12th five-wicket haul in a Test innings but first at Lord's.

Shahbaz Ahmed's journey: From most backward district to Team India

cricket commentary of Jasdev Singh and Sushil Doshi on radio that his grandfather was hooked to. Mohammad Ishaq, 73, cannot believe that one day the commentary could be about his grandson. “That’ll be my happiest day, when he plays for the country,” he says. That day may not be far off. Shahbaz, 27, is part of Team India’s ODI squad in Zimbabwe as replacement for the injury-racked Washington Sundar. A slow left-arm spinner and effective lower middle-order southpaw, Shahbaz plies his trade for Bengal and RCB. But he comes from the Muslim-majority Nuh in Haryana’s Mewat, named as India’s most backward district by Niti Aayog. Shahbaz’s selection has prompted collective joy in a region where sporting models are rare. “There is no dearth of talent in Mewat. They need to be found and given a platform. Illiteracy and joblessness are our two main miseries,” says Ramzan Chaudhary, a social activist and chief of the All India Mewati Samaj. Shahbaz, who has been included in Team India’s ODI squad in Zimbabwe as replacement for Washington Sundar, has impressed everyone with his allround skills and temperament since making his first-class debut in 2018.
