Sources: Anthony Davis, Wizards table contract talks until season starts - ESPN

The Washington Wizards and Anthony Davis' agent, Rich Paul, have mutually decided to wait on talks for a potential extension until after the season starts, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.

One source told Charania that this gives both sides the first 20 or so games to marinate over a potential extension and see how the early part of the season goes for the Wizards and for the 10-time All-Star.

Davis became eligible Thursday to sign a contract extension for up to four years and $275 million. The first year of the extension would replace a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28.

The decision to revisit extension talks between the Wizards and Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports Group, until after the first quarter of the season allows Davis to see what the Washington organization is like, get a better idea of how competitive the team is going to be, gauge the Wizards' ability to add talent and see more of their plan for the future.

The extra time also allows the Wizards to see how Davis performs, how his and the team's health is, and if this roster is able to make the jump they expect to take this season after the first chunk of the year.

The Athletic first reported that extension talks between Davis and the Wizards will not take place before the season.

The Wizards have lost 64 or more games in each of the last three seasons. But they acquired Davis and point guard Trae Young last season to accelerate their rebuild with hopes that the duo will elevate Washington to a playoff contender this season and mentor the team's young core that features 2026 No. 1 draft pick AJ Dybantsa and third-year center Alex Sarr.
