McClelland takes swipe at Indiana despite Hoosiers' recent national title - ESPN

Indiana won college football's national championship just a few months ago. Purdue hasn't won a national championship of any kind in 16 years. The facts didn't stop new Boilermakers athletic director Tommy McClelland from taking a shot at Purdue's instate rival.

«Every recruit, every current student athlete will hear this message repeatedly — we are here to win championships,» McClelland said Thursday during his introductory news conference. «If you don't want to win championships, go to Indiana.»

McClelland arrives in West Lafayette with the Purdue and Indiana football programs sitting on opposite ends of the Big Ten hierarchy.

Under coach Curt Cignetti, the Hoosiers are 27-2 over the past two seasons. They defeated the Boilermakers 56-3 to end the regular season on the way to a perfect 16-0 record and the national championship.

In 2024, the Hoosiers beat Purdue 66-0 to clinch an at-large spot in the playoff.

Meanwhile, Purdue last tasted victory in the Big Ten at the end of the 2023 season, when the Boilermakers defeated Indiana 35-31.

The next day, the Hoosiers fired Tom Allen and eventually hired Cignetti.

Not long after taking the job, Cignetti grabbed the mic at halftime of a men's basketball game and said, «Purdue sucks! But so does Michigan and Ohio State.»

The Hoosiers have since beaten all three teams, including the Buckeyes in last year's Big Ten championship game.

The Boilermakers have been a powerhouse in men's basketball of late, making it to the 2024 national championship, where they lost to UConn.

Purdue hasn't won an NCAA national championship in any sport since the women's golf team in 2010. It remains the school's only national championship this millennium.
