Sol Campbell giving his verdict on the 2018 World Cup knockout stage was comedy gold

Sol Campbell is certainly in the conversation to be labelled the greatest defender in Premier League history.

With both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, the towering centre-back gobbled up strikers for fun.

Campbell won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups with the Gunners, as well as a League Cup at Spurs.

The 47-year-old was also voted into the PFA Premier League Team of the Year on three separate occasions (1998/99, 2002/03 and 2003/04).

Campbell is certainly an all-time great and he also enjoyed an 11-year international career with England.

But while he was a terrific player for well over a decade, his punditry often leaves a lot to be desired.

Campbell famously had to be reminded by Micah Richards live on air that Manchester City’s Phil Foden was left-footed.

And in 2018, the former Macclesfield manager had a bit of a mare on Sky Sports when giving his verdict on the World Cup knockout stage.

In the broadcaster’s studio, Campbell was asked who he thought would progress from an eventual quarter-final between Brazil and Belgium.

Spoiler alert, he didn’t say Brazil or Belgium…

That clip will never not be funny. The way Campbell just casually looks at the screen and replies “France” is like something out of a comedy sketch.

Shortly after his shocker live-on-air, the Arsenal legend was asked to name the two teams he believed would contest the World Cup final.

Campbell selected England and Belgium, with neither country eventually making it to the tournament’s grand finale in Moscow.

We’ll certainly let him off there, though, as that was far from the worst prediction.
