Socceroos' Mabil makes Turkish loan move
Socceroos winger Awer Mabil will be hoping a loan move to Turkish club Kasimpasa for the remainder of the European season can get his career back on track.
The former Adelaide United attacker had been a regular at FC Midtjylland for the past three and a half years, playing in the Champions League group stage with the Danish club last season against European heavyweights Liverpool and Ajax.
However, the 26-year-old has struggled for regular appearances this season, featuring just nine times and suffering a bout of COVID-19 after Christmas.
His lack of game time resulted in Mabil, a mainstay in Australia's World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign, being overlooked by national team coach Graham Arnold for the recent matches against Vietnam and Oman.
With his contract at Midtjylland to expire at the end of the season, the move to Turkey will also hopefully help Mabil attract a permanent switch in the European summer.
"He deserves to play more, and we have landed an agreement that all parties are happy with," Midtjylland sports manager Svend Graversen said.
"We are happy about that, because Awer is an incredibly well-liked person throughout FC Midtjylland, and we hope that he will have lots of success this spring."
Mabil has won the Danish Cup and the Superliga during his spell with Midtjylland, scoring 20 goals in 146 games.
Kasimpasa, based in the Turkish capital Istanbul, are 14th in the 20-team Super Lig and just two points above the relegation zone.
