Snake Pass: Motorcyclist killed in crash with car that saw major road closed

A motorcyclist has been killed following a crash with a car on the A57 Snake Pass.

The busy road was closed in both directions following the smash involving a blue Suzuki motorcycle and a Kia Picanto at 11.20am today (Sunday). The rider of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released any further details about the victim. The driver of the car was "not seriously injured", officers said.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a vehicle on fire and "plumes of smoke" in the air, as well as an air ambulance.

A 13-mile long stretch of the Snake Pass - a key route between Manchester and Sheffield - was shut between Hurst Road, in Glossop, and the Ladybower Reservoir, for more than nine hours while investigations were carried out. It has since reopened.

Police are now appealing for information about the crash.
