Sky Sports apologise to Clyde's David Goodwillie after branding player a 'racist' instead of 'rapist'

Sky Sports have issued an apology to Clyde striker David Goodwillie after accidentally calling the player a racist instead of a rapist.

In an embrrassing live apology on Sky Sports News last night, the channel said sorry for the mix-up regarding the 32-year-old, who this week rejoined the Bully Wee after a controversial move to Raith Rovers from the Broadwood club last month caused a huge backlash.

Goodwillie was ruled a rapist in a 2017 civil court case after he and former team-mate David Robertson were deemed by a judge to have raped Denise Clair after a night out in West Lothian.

However, when reporting on his recent return to Clyde Sky Sports confused racist and rapist and were forced to make an on-air clarification last night.

Their presenter said: “We would like to issue an apology to Mr Goodwillie.

“A little earlier this evening, in error, we reported that he had been ruled to be a racist in a civil case in 2017.

“The ruling in question was actually that Goodwillie was ruled to be a rapist in that case.

“We apologise for the error in reporting.”

Goodwillie's return to Clyde - where he played for five years before his transfer to Raith - has also been met with criticism and North Lanarkshire Council, who operate Broadwood Stadium where Clyde play their home matches, have said they are reviewing their partnerhsip with the club.
