Skipper Bavuma gutted after Proteas World Cup shocker: 'A lot went wrong'

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma acknowledged that the dreaded 'monkey' would continue to plague the current South African team after their shocking exit from the T20 World Cup in Australia.

The Proteas crashed out of the T20 World Cup on Sunday after being stunned by the Netherlands at Adelaide Oval.

South African-born Colin Ackermann top-scored with an unbeaten 41 as the Dutch side posted 158-4.

Chasing 159 to win, the Proteas faltered with the bat, losing wickets at regular intervals, with Rilee Rossouw top-scoring with 25.

South Africa, who needed a win over the minnow nation, were restricted to 145-8, falling 13 runs short of a win and failing yet again to make the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup.

Bavuma could not hide his disappointment, stating that South Africa struggled to adapt with mistakes being made in all facets of the game.

"A lot went wrong. Obviously, with a performance like that, you can pick out a lot of things," Bavuma told reporters on Sunday.

"Looking at the toss, we opted to bowl first and you expect us to put them under pressure with the ball, and we obviously didn't do that. That being said, we still had a role with the bat and we just couldn't get any type of momentum or flow into our innings. We couldn't adapt, they made use of the dimensions in the field.

"It's disappointing for all of us. The most disappointing thing is probably that we were unable to go over the line when we needed to.

"We knew we had to win the game, the mistakes were made on the field and those were all tactical decisions."

South Africa's unlucky history at ICC events continues as they have yet to reach a World Cup final.
