Cricket SA points to 'glaring shortcomings' after Proteas World Cup howler

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has slammed the Proteas' performance at the T20 World Cup in Australia following Sunday's 13-run defeat to the Netherlands in Adelaide that saw them knocked out.

The Proteas entered the match as overwhelming favourites and knew that a win would be enough to see them progress to the quarter-finals.

Instead, they could only muster 145/8 in their pursuit of 159 and while the Dutch bagged a famous win, the South Africans were left licking their wounds.

It was a particularly tough campaign for captain Temba Bavuma, who has been on the receiving end of significant criticism for his lack of form with the bat.

Bavuma said he would not make any decisions on the captaincy just yet, but this was certainly the final act for head coach Mark Boucher, who now stands down from his role to focus on a position with the Mumbai Indians.

The Proteas had two opportunities to qualify for the semi-finals, but losses to Pakistan and then the Netherlands squashed that dream".

In a statement released on Sunday, CSA was scathing of the performance of the national side.

"The reality is that the team did not perform to expectations, which occasioned this disappointing outcome. It is our duty to regroup and rebuild based on our glaring shortcomings at the T20 World Cup," Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe said.

CSA Chief Executive Officer, Pholetsi Moseki, was equally disappointed. 

"The Proteas went to the ICC T20 World Cup with high hopes that they would make it to the final. CSA supported the team on their campaign and held high hopes that they will carry through," he said.

"It is unfortunate that they did not make it as we had all hoped. However, it is incumbent to support them into the future.
