Six Manchester United starting spots up could be for grabs vs Man City in Community Shield

Manchester United have already beaten Manchester City at Wembley this year and this weekend marks round two in a psychological thriller.

After closing out last season with a shock 2-1 win over the Blues in the FA Cup final, United will go toe-to-toe with their cross-city rivals once more ahead of the new campaign, with another win indicating that May’s meeting was no fluke.

The reality is that Man City are still favourites and will be going for their first shield since 2019 having lost the last two editions. Both they and United embarked on pre-season tours of the USA but will only cross paths this summer in London on Saturday.

United have had a number of notable performers during their travels and several will be eyeing starting spots at Wembley.

Leny Yoro would have certainly started the match in what would have been a great litmus test but for his three-month metatarsal injury. His absence means both centre-back spots might be up for grabs.

Lisandro Martinez is expected to occupy one but he only returned from his break post-Copa America on Monday and so is yet to train at all this summer. And so Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire have a chance of starting if Martinez is deemed not to have gained the necessary fitness levels.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s inclusion in the game could give further hints about his future at the club amid exit links. Luke Shaw’s Monday return is later than those of his teammates due to England's progression to the Euro 2024 final.
