Seven time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he is currently in the process of changing his name to include his mum’s surname.

The shock news came as the talented driver was speaking at the Dubai Expo, where he revealed a name change wouldn't be too far away.

The decision behind the name stems from a desire to eradicate the sexism surrounding the tradition of women losing their surnames when they get married, reports the Mirror.

Hamilton's own parents, Anthony Hamilton and Carmen Larbalestier, divorced when Lewis was still only a toddler.

“I’m really proud of my family’s name: Hamilton,” Hamilton said.

“Actually none of you might know that my mum’s name is Larbalestier. And I’m just about to put that in my name. Because I don’t really fully understand the whole idea of why, when people get married, the woman loses her name. I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name.”

Hamilton, who was pictured alongside his mother as he accepted his knighthood at Windsor Castle last December, admitted he is unsure of when the change will be officially ratified, but he hopes the change will be made prior to this weekend's season opener, the Bahrain Grand Prix.
