Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already received a glowing Dan Ashworth reference for Manchester United job

Manchester United's incoming co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is quickly gaining a solid reputation for getting the individuals in-house who he feels will push the Reds back to where they need to be.

The appointment of Omar Berrada from Manchester City was the first sign of the new look United being formed. Managing to persuade a key figure at the City Football Group to cross the divide shows the pulling power the Reds hold when showing signs of fresh optimism.

Now Ratcliffe's next target also seems willing to make the big leap. MEN Sport understands Dan Ashworth wants to leave Newcastle and join the Reds.

INEOS are thought to be so confident of Ashworth's arrival, they are no longer sounding out alternatives. Even so, should his appointment be confirmed it would reflect a major coup for United.

The project at St James' Park is starting to take shape following their Middle East takeover in 2021. While form has dipped this season, qualification for Europe is not out of the question for the next campaign and once Financial Fair Play (FFP) concerns are addressed, you would not bet against Newcastle making another push for the top four.

It is also clear how strongly the Magpies will fight to keep hold of their man. In December, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe gave a glowing reference for his sporting director when the links first emerged.
