Sir Bobby Charlton funeral details announced as Manchester United say service will celebrate 'one of England's finest'

Sir Bobby Charlton's funeral will celebrate 'one of the finest footballers this country has ever produced', Manchester United have said. The club have released details of the service for the Old Trafford and England legend, who died on October 21 aged 86.

The funeral cortege will pass Old Trafford before arriving at Manchester Cathedral at 2pm on Monday (November 13). Fans have been invited to pay their respects along the route.

Sir Bobby died following an accidental fall at a nursing home in Knutsford, an inquest heard. He made 606 appearances for United, then a club record, between 1956 and 1973, scoring 199 goals.

A key member of the 1968 European Cup winning team, Sir Bobby was also an FA Cup and three-time league winner. In a glittering career he also played 106 times for England and helped lead his country to victory in the 1966 World Cup.

In a statement United said the funeral procession was expected to pass in front of the Trinity statue, which depicts Sir Bobby alongside George Best and Denis Law, at 1.30pm. At the cathedral a private service will be led by Canon Nigel Ashworth and include eulogies by family members and the football club.

"It is expected that up to 1,000 guests will attend the cathedral to pay their respects to Sir Bobby and celebrate his incredible life as a husband, father, grandfather and, of course, as one of the finest footballers this country has ever produced," the club said.
