Sir Alex Ferguson gets Aberdeen standing ovation as Dons icon makes grand return for statue unveiling

Sir Alex Ferguson received a standing ovation from Aberdeen fans as he made a poignant return to Pittodrie.

The Dons' greatest ever manager was back in the north east on Friday to attend the unveiling of a statue in his honour.

Ferguson won the European Cup Winners' Cup and European Super Cup with Aberdeen during the 1980s, as well as bringing unprecedented domestic success in ending Celtic and Rangers ' duopoly by capturing three top-flight titles.

Before moving on to more unparalleled success at Manchester United, he also won four Scottish Cups and a League Cup with the Dons.

Aberdeen fans sold out the Richard Donald Stand on Friday to welcome Ferguson back for a triumphant homecoming event.

And footage captured the moment the 80-year-old stepped out of the Pittodrie tunnel for a special ceremony, where he was then greeted by club chairman Dave Cormack.

A number of Dons legends and former players, including Willie Miller, Gordon Strachan and Craig Brown, were also in attendance to see the tribute being revealed to the public.

You can watch Sir Alex's arrival in the video above.
