Singapore GP: Carlos Sainz fastest in FP2

Carlos Sainz went fastest in FP2 at the Singapore Grand Prix ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc.

Ferrari are looking to try and prolong the wait for Max Verstappen to win the world championship this weekend, and have laid down a good marker in FP2 with their drivers locking out the top two.

They’d certainly take that tomorrow in qualifying, then, with them also showing good long-run pace during the session, suggesting their race pace should be strong.

Mercedes are also looking promising this weekend, on a track that they have not always enjoyed in the past, with George Russell in 3rd and Lewis Hamilton in 5th.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the session, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said that he feels as though Mercedes are very much in the fight for pole this weekend, whilst also saying long run pace looked good in comparison to Ferrari, though both Russell and Hamilton did complain of a few ride issues given the bumpy nature of the Singapore street circuit surface.

Between the Mercs was Verstappen in P4, with him missing the start of the session as his mechanics worked on his Red Bull car, with this following on from a problem in FP1 for team-mate Sergio Perez who had a driveshaft issue.

Perez would go ninth-fastest in FP2 and clearly has a bit of work to do around set-up for Saturday.

Behind Hamilton, meanwhile, was Esteban Ocon in sixth with the Frenchman showing good pace in the Alpine ahead of Valtteri Bottas in the Alfa Romeo and Fernando Alonso in the other Alpine.

McLaren, Alpine’s rivals for fourth in the standings, won’t be looking at Friday too favourably as things stand.

Lance Stroll, meanwhile, was the final man inside the top 10, with him clearly feeling at home in the Aston in Singapore at the moment
