Simple potato storage hack will stop spuds from sprouting for longer using household item

A lifestyle expert has shared a number of essential fruit and veg tips, including one that can stop your potatoes from sprouting too soon.

TikTok user @lifetips669 posted a video sharing various handy hints to make your grocery shops go further. "Vegetable vendors will never tell you these food storage tips," they said.

In the video, they break down the science behind their potato storage method explaining: "Potatoes bought in bulk go bad. Potatoes and apples are good friends. Storing them together prevents sprouting."

According to Tasting Table, apples produce the natural gas ethylene, and exposure to this "can slow down or halt potatoes' sprouting process". The advice from the site also includes keeping potatoes out of warm conditions, suggesting a "cool, dry and dark" location being the best.

However, remember not to put them inside the fridge as the cold may "trigger the potato's starches to transform into sugars, which can become carcinogenic when cooked". Also note that ethylene gas released from apples can actually have the opposite effect on other foods, like onions, melons, broccoli, and peaches due their high sensitivity to ethylene, speeding up their ripening making them unfit for consumption sooner.

In an ingenious tip, TikToker @lifetips669 proposes storing shrimp in an empty mineral water bottle filled with tap water. Their guidance is to "Tighten the cap and freeze it," asserting this method will keep it fresh for a year.

The user also suggests submerging broccoli in water to extend its freshness and says that keeping onions in stockings enables them to "last a long time".
