Simon Jordan suggests Newcastle United would be backward step for Jesse Lingard

Simon Jordan believes moving to Newcastle United or West Ham would be a step down for Jesse Lingard. A loan move to Tyneside in January broke down amid concerns over a reported £12million “survival bonus” Manchester United wanted to insert in the England international’s contract.

The Red Devils have confirmed Lingard will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the month. Premier League clubs are monitoring the 29-year-old’s situation, with European clubs also vying for his signature.

Just three top-flight starts in 2022-23 made Lingard surplus to requirements and seeking a new club - but former Crystal Palace owner Jordan insists joining the Magpies would be a backward step. ChronicleLive understands the midfielder is demanding up to £200k-a-week from potential suitors.

Speaking on his mid-morning talkSPORT breakfast show, Jordan said: “The bottom line is who is going to pay what Jesse Lingard wants. West Ham and Newcastle, whilst both of those clubs will feel they are in the ascendancy, Jesse Lingard leaving Manchester United and dropping into West Ham or Newcastle isn’t showing his career is in an upward direction.

“So, he has to perhaps be more realistic. The assumption you don’t have to pay something for a player, it enables you to have the opportunity to bolster their wages. But clubs aren’t going to set a precedent.”
