Simbine powers to 100m win as SA athletes delight in Ostrava
South African sprinter Akani Simbine powered to victory in the men's 100m race at the Golden Spike World Athletics Continental Tour meet in Ostrava.
Simbine was the sole sprinter to go under the 10-second mark as he crossed the finish line in 9.98.
The South African finished ahead of Italian Samuele Ceccarelli (10.15) and Canadian Olympic medallist Andre de Grasse (10.21).
Simbine wasn't the only South African who tasted victory in the Czech Republic as Luxolo Adams ran a season-best to win the men's 200m race.
Adams and his fellow compatriot Sinesipho Dambile flew the flag high as they ended first and second in the 200m race, respectively.
Adams stopped the clock in 20.22, with Dambile coming in second in 20.58. Slovakian Ján Volko rounded the podium in a time of 20.65.
In the men's 400m, South Africa's Zakithi Nene finished second in 45.22 seconds in the one-lapper, finishing behind the winner Zambia's Muzala Samukonga (45.02).
Long-distance runner Mafori Ryan Mphahlele finished second in the men's 1 500m race.
Mphahlele finished behind Ethopia's Lamecha Girma, who stopped the clock with a personal best of 3:33.15. Mphahlele earned silver as he posted a time of 3:33.38.
On the women's side, South Africa's Taylon Bieldt placed third in the 400m hurdles event.
Bieldt, who led for some of the race, dropped to third, crossing the line in 55.35 seconds.
Britain's Jessie Knight won the race in 54.96, with Czech's Nikoleta Jíchová finishing second in 55.17 to finish ahead of Bieldt.
