Ibrox giants Rangers have been dealt a big blow in their pursuit of bringing a new goalkeeper to Glasgow this summer…

The agent of one of the club’s transfer targets has hinted that his client could sign a new contract with 2. Bundesliga side Schalke in the coming months.

Ross Wilson is reportedly keen to snap up Martin Fraisl from Gelsenkirchen and the Austrian’s representative, Sascha Empascher, has provided an update on his situation as his contract is set to expire in July.

Speaking to German media outlet WAZ, he said: “Martin has some requests on the same level, so don’t worry.

“There are signals from the club to talk to Martin after the end of the season.

“Schalke is a fair club, Martin is a real sportsman and it goes on one way or another. He is the potential promotion goalkeeper and loves Schalke.”

This update will surely leave the supporters feeling gutted as it suggests that the Gers could be about to miss out on his services.

As it stands, he is set to be a free agent at the end of the season and this would allow Rangers to sign him without paying a penny in transfer fees. They would not need to negotiate a fee with Schalke and would be able to sign him with no issues aside from his wages, but this latest claim from his agent hints at a new deal with the German side.

The fact that he ‘loves’ the second division outfit and the club want to speak with him over fresh terms is bad news for Gio van Bronckhorst and the Light Blues as him staying there would be a big blow to the club.

Rangers need a new number one for next season and Fraisl would be an excellent addition to the team. Allan McGregor is out of contract this summer and the 40-year-old’s departure will leave a vacant spot between the sticks next term.
