Should fracking stay banned?

Fracking has been a controversial issue for a number of years, and has been pushed to the forefront of people's minds by newly appointed Prime Minister Liz Truss's decision to overturn the ban on the practice.

The ban was originally put in place in 2019, but has now been lifted by the PM in an attempt to help tackle rising energy prices.

Following this latest move by the government, we want to know what your thoughts are on whether or not fracking should stay banned.

Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

While the ban has been lifted, the PM has said that fracking - which uses drilling and pumping water to extract gas and oil from shale rock - would only happen in areas that had local support for it.

However, the only fracking site that broke ground prior to the 2019 ban (Little Plumpton, near Blackpool) was met with repeated protests.

While supporters of fracking have argued that the extra production of gas will help decrease energy prices, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has argued : ""Fracking won't deliver energy any time soon. You're talking years before that gas starts to flow and when it does we're supposed be going towards net zero, so it's taking us in a backwards direction."
