Should face masks and distancing be brought back?

NHS leaders have called on the government to review its Living with Covid plan after warning the NHS could face similar pressures during spring as it would during a "bad winter."

It fears current messaging to the public could “mislead and discourage them to take steps to reduce transmission, contributing to the very high rates of Covid -19".

The Confederation, a membership body representing healthcare organisations, has called for strong measures to try and combat transmission such as wearing the best possible face masks.

Matthew Taylor, CEO of the NHS Confederation, urged people to "be aware of the things that we can all do individually that just make a little bit of difference" amid growing concerns of pressure on the NHS.

The Confederation urged ministers to reinvigorate its public information campaign on Covid-19, including a renewed focus on mask wearing and encouraging people to meet up outdoors and in well-ventilated places whenever possible.

However a Number 10 spokeswoman said there were no plans to alter the approach.

She said: “There is no change to our guidance and our living with Covid plan still stands.

“Thanks to a combination of vaccination and treatment and our better understanding of the virus we are now able to manage it as we do with other respiratory infections, so that remains the case with our approach."
