Shoppers left stunned after supermarkets sell mince pies - despite UK's heatwave

Shoppers have been left stunned after supermarkets started stocking mince pies and selection boxes - despite Britain basking in record temperatures.

Some Tesco customers dubbed the chain's festive decision 'ridiculous', while one scrooge said it forces people to spend more money at Christmas.

Pictures from the supermarket's Saville Street store in Sheffield, South Yorks., show shelves full of Christmas puddings, mince pies and panettone.

The aisles are also stocked with Cadbury's selection boxes, Lindt chocolate Santas and boxes of Celebrations and Quality Streets.

And also in Manchester city centre, with Tesco on Deansgate stocking the Christmas treat.

Sharing a photo on X, Cllr Pat Karney wrote: "Hot mince pies for hot day. Just caught them at the Deansgate Tescos. Joyous."

It comes just a day after the hottest day of the years was recorded on Thursday when temperatures of 32.6C were recorded in Wisley, Surrey.

Another record loomed today as the heatwave continued, marking six consecutive September days above 30C, beating five set in 1911.

Met Office forecasters are even suggesting seven days in a row above 30C for some areas, ending on Sunday.

Angry customers are blasting the supermarket's decision, with one saying that 'Christmas can p**s off.'

One shopper in Sheffield, called Amanda, said she feels like shops putting out their Christmas stock is 'making people worry more about the cost of living.'

She said: "It's ridiculous - it's getting earlier each year and you are forced to feel the financial pressure already. We still have Halloween and Bonfire Night to think about.
