Shock and disbelief as murder investigation launched following death of man on quiet residential estate

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was found fatally wounded in Rochdale.

Officers were called to Atholl Drive in Heywood, after a man was found with serious injuries early this morning. He was pronounced dead a short time later, GMP said.

A 19-year-old man and 20-year-old woman have since been arrested on suspicion of murder. One is in police custody waiting to be questioned and the other is receiving hospital treatment.

Detectives have now began a murder investigation as they try to piece the full circumstances which led to the man's death.

They said that prior to the man being found critically injured, another man is believed to have asked for help from the occupants of a property a short distance away.

A major police presence remained on Atholl Drive and the surrounding areas this morning (Saturday). Numerous police vehicles, forensics and plain clothed officers have all been pictured at the scene.

Crime Scene Investigators could be seen laying out markers on the road and pavement, as they carried out their enquiries.

People could be seen visibly upset at the edge of the police cordon, with neighbours seen coming out of their houses to see what was happening.

Speaking to the M.E.N, one shocked neighbour said: "That is so surreal, I can't believe it. Another neighbour who said she knew the victim's mum, said: "That poor woman's family."

One said: "I’ve lived here for 8 years and nothing like this ever happened this is mad." Another said: "I didn’t hear anything about a murder but I heard shouting and banging last night."

GMP say their enquiries are still 'ongoing' and have appealed to anyone with information
