Shilese Jones leads over Olympians at U.S. Gymnastics Championships
Shilese Jones leads the U.S. Gymnastics Championships after the first of two nights of competition, topping a field that includes Olympic and world championships medalists.
Jones, 20, tallied 57.2 points on the first of two nights of competition. She has an eight-tenths edge over 17-year-old Konnor McClaingoing into Sunday’s finale. Jones can become the oldest first-time U.S. women’s all-around champion in more than 50 years.
Tokyo Olympic medalists Jordan Chiles and Jade Careyare tied for third and fifth, respectively, returning solidly to elite competition for the first time since the Games.
Leanne Wong, an Olympic alternate and the world all-around silver medalist, scratched her last two events after a tough landing on her balance beam dismount.
Gymnasts are bidding for national titles and spots on the five-woman team for this fall’s world championships. That roster will be finalized after an October selection camp.
Nationals continue Saturday with the second and final day of men’s competition.
