Sheringham predicts huge ‘sliding-doors moment’ with Conte, Kane at Tottenham

Teddy Sheringham believes that a Champions League finish on Sunday will be enough to secure the long-term futures of Tottenham’s Antonio Conte and Harry Kane.

There has been speculation over the future of Italian boss Conte, despite only arriving in November. The team’s inconsistent form has led to talk the former Chelsea boss will quit this summer.

Conte in fact fanned the flames of the speculation after being far from complimentary about Spurs’ January transfer business. He also questioned whether he was the right man for the job in February.

Conte has always maintained he will sit down with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy at the end of the season after branding speculation linking him with the Paris St Germain job as “fake news”.

“At the end of the season we speak with the club but with pleasure, in a really good way. To speak and try to find the best solution for everybody,” said Conte last month.

And Sheringham thinks Levy will do all he can to keep Conte.

“I certainly hope so. I’m a big believer in Daniel Levy because he’s gone out and tried to do the best for Tottenham. He went out and got [Jose] Mourinho, he paid for the best, it didn’t quite work out,” he told football.london.

“He’s gone out again and he’s got Conte. He’s paying top dollar for the managers to try and make Tottenham better. Why wouldn’t he keep going and back the manager that could get them into Champions League football?”

Kane meanwhile has been very quiet on his long-term plans ever since he pledged his immediate future to the club last summer.

He was wanted by Man City in the summer transfer window in 2021 and Pep Guardiola made two bids for the striker.
