Shell pair dominate Supercars qualifying

Shell V-Power Racing drivers Anton De Pasquale and Will Davison have made the perfect start to the 2022 Supercars championship, finishing one-two in the first qualifying session of the year at Sydney Motorsport Park.

De Pasquale qualified fastest for Saturday afternoon's top 10 shootout for pole position with a 1 minute 29.7599 second lap in the 15-minute qualifying run.

Teammate Davison was second fastest with a 1:30.0111 to ensure both Shell Ford Mustangs have a crack at pole position for the opening race of the championship, to be run under lights on Saturday at the Eastern Creek-based circuit from 7.10pm AEDT.

Defending champion Shane Van Gisbergen was third-fastest with a 1:30.1017 as he found form on a dry track after struggling in damp conditions for Friday's practice.

Teenage Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate Broc Feeney, in his first event as the replacement for legendary driver Jamie Whincup, just sneaked into the shootout as well by qualifying 10th.

Bathurst 1000 champion Chaz Mostert, who was quickest in practice on Friday, also qualified for the shootout along with Andre Heimgartner, Will Brown, Brodie Kostecki, Tim Slade and David Reynolds.

Ford youngster Jake Kostecki had an eventful run, going off the track early and onto the slippery wet grass before then being handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Heimgartner later in the session meaning the Tickford Racing driver will start from the back row in Saturday's 77-lap race.

The top 10 shootout to decide the first pole position of the season will begin at 4.30pm AEDT.
