Sheffield Wednesday & Ipswich Town promotion verdicts given as Bolton Wanderers prediction made

Bolton Wanderers sit just a point from the play-offs after a sold start to the new League One campaign.

Wanderers returned to winning ways in the division with a 3-1 victory at the University of Bolton Stadium over Charlton Athletic. Goals from Conor Bradley, Kieran Lee and George Johnston overcame an earlier strike from Scott Fraser.

Wanderers sit in eighth place as things stand and a just a point from the top six. Ian Evatt's side have a busy and challenging September fixture list where they will be aiming to maintain their solid start to the campaign.

Throughout the campaign, football statistics website FiveThirtyEight is forecasting how the League One table might finish after the results of every matchday, with the season reaching the climax of the regular season at the start of May before the play-offs.

Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday are tipped to be the division's top two and earn automatic promotion to the Championship by the start of May. The quartet of Derby County, Portsmouth, Barnsley and Plymouth Argyle are predicted to be the four sides slogging it out in the play-offs.

Wanderers meanwhile are predicted to finish eighth with a points tally of 72 and two off the top six. They are calculated to have a 28% chance of making the play-offs, a 15% chance of achieving promotion in some way and a 3% chance of winning League One.

At the other end of the table, Port Vale, Forest Green Rovers, Morecambe and Burton Albion are predicted to suffer relegation to League Two.
