Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan offers League One play-off verdict

Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan wants to put automatic promotion disappointment behind him in an effort to help his side secure a spot in the League One play-offs.

Wednesday were dealt a hammer blow by Wycombe Wanderers at the weekend, losing 1-0 to end their chances of finishing in an automatic promotion place.

However, they still hold a game in hand on both Wycombe and Plymouth who sit above them in the table, meaning that a win against Fleetwood Town on Tuesday would catapult them back up into the play-off spots heading into the final game of the season.

And while it was frustrating for him and Wednesday to miss out on automatic promotion, a reflective Bannan believes that his side are ready to bounce back.

“It’s disappointing but it’s still in our hands,” said Bannan following the loss to Wycombe.

“Obviously automatics are out of the way now which is a big blow but we’ve got to recover now. We’ve got a massive game now on Tuesday and we know if we can win that, we go into Saturday with our fans behind us knowing that if we win that we’re in the play-offs.”

Sitting at opposite ends of the table, Fleetwood are fighting for their League One lives, with the Tuesday night hosts sitting in 20th place. Stephen Crainey’s side have only won three times since the turn of the year meaning that Wednesday head into the contest clear favourites.

But despite the table suggesting Wednesday should have an easy time of it against Fleetwood, Bannan reckons his side are in for a fight on Tuesday night.

“Fleetwood is going to be another tough game,” added Bannan. "They are fighting for their lives just above the drop at the moment so they’ve got it all to play for.
