Sheffield United now know exactly what they need to secure Championship playoff spot

Sheffield United head into the final day of the Championship campaign knowing that matching either Luton Town or Middlesbrough's results will see them secure a top-six finish and punch their ticket to the play-offs.

The Blades managed to come from behind against QPR to run out 3-1 winners at the Kiyan Prince Stadium ensuring they start the last day of the Championship season this weekend in the sixth and final play-off place.

Fulham have now been crowned champions following their 7-0 thrashing of Luton, while Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest are set to face each other tomorrow night in what could be one of the biggest games in Championship history. Should Forest win, they will leapfrog Bournemouth into second place heading into the final game of the season.

A draw could see Forest go up if they win on the final day of the season against Hull City should Bournemouth lose to Millwall. Huddersfield sit fourth and have sown up their spot in the play-offs, meaning that they, alongside one of Forest and Bournemouth will have their season extended.

Luton's 7-0 thrasing by Fulham on Monday evening has meant that Nathan Jones' surprise package spurned the opportunity to wrap up fifth place and has handed the final-day initiative to Sheffield United, with the two teams locked on 72 points, but the Hatters now with a vastly inferior goal difference.

That means Paul Heckingbottom's side need only to match Luton's result on Saturday to seal a top-six finish. They do, however, have to face freshly crowned champions Fulham, while Luton face what looks to be an easier task at home to 21st-placed Reading. Should seventh place Middlesbrough fail to win, then both Sheffield United and Luton will make the play-offs.
