Sheffield United attempting to secure transfer deal for 20-year-old Liverpool player

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom is desperately trying to acquire a centre-back before the transfer deadline on Monday, according to the Sheffield Star.

And he’s set to try and raid Liverpool for youngster Rhys Williams – although the Blades did have another target in mind.

United and the Reds have already done some transfer business with each other this season with another centre-back in Ben Davies making the switch from Merseyside to Yorkshire earlier in the season.

With Jack O’Connell not yet recovered from a knee injury though and Davies having missed the last four Championship fixtures, extra bodies are needed at the back.

Per the Star, Nat Phillips was wanted from the Anfield side by the Blades but Premier League interest in his signature means that Williams is the number one target for the Championship side.

Williams was recently recalled by Liverpool after spending the first half of the 2021-22 season on loan at Swansea City, where he made just five league appearances.

The 20-year-0ld could secure a new move away from Anfield though in the coming days if United can strike an agreement with Jurgen Klopp’s side though.

The Verdict

Williams didn’t exactly impress in his time at Swansea but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a decent signing for United.

He was thrown in at the deep end at Liverpool last season just months after completing a loan spell at Kidderminster Harriers and gained some good experience from playing at the highest level of club football.

The Championship has proved to be a different test for Williams so far though but playing alongside the likes of John Egan and potentially Davies could make him a better player.
